A reader who follows a Western horoscope column as a Leo is often puzzled to be told by the family astrologer that they are, in fact, a Karka. Nobody is wrong. The confusion comes from three distinct answers to the question “what is your sign?”, and knowing which is which will save you from reading the wrong rashifal for the rest of your life.
Surya rashi — the Sun sign
The surya rashi is the sign the Sun occupied at your birth. Because the Sun spends a month in each sign, it is the easy sign to know — the birth date alone almost always settles it — which is exactly why Western newspaper astrology adopted it. In the Indian system the Sun sign matters for the soul’s dignity, the father, authority and vitality, but it is not the sign daily predictions are written for. Note also that Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign behind the tropical Western one.
Chandra rashi — the Moon sign
The chandra rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, and this is the “rashi” of Indian usage. The Moon governs the mind (manas) in jyotish, and since it changes sign every two and a quarter days, it says something far more individual than the Sun’s month-long stay. The daily and yearly rashifal in the Indian tradition — including the 2026 varshik rashifal on this site — is written from the chandra rashi. Gochara (transit) results, the reckoning of Sade Sati, and the whole nakshatra system key off the Moon. When a purohit asks your rashi, this is the one he means.
Lagna — the ascendant
The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes every two hours or so, which makes it the most personal marker of the three and the reason an accurate birth time matters so much. The lagna fixes the frame of the whole kundli: it becomes the first house, and every planet’s house position follows from it. Questions of physique, temperament, career and life-direction are judged primarily from the lagna chart.
In practice the three work together. A thorough astrologer reads the kundli from the lagna, checks the same themes from the chandra rashi (treated as a first house in its own right — the chandra lagna), and weighs the Sun’s position for vitality and standing. Where all three agree, the judgement is firm.
Your Achaaryam free kundli reports both your surya and chandra rashi, computed from the real positions of the two luminaries. For daily reading, follow your Moon sign — and if you have only ever known your Western Sun sign, prepare for a small surprise.
